It was maybe a month ago or so that we were talking in a meeting with the Vineyard Servants Team about direction for the fellowship (after we finish Acts in June). Two of the Servants Team members said they felt we should look at Hebrews. After considering this, and realizing that I have had leanings in this direction off and on for awhile, I decided recently to pursue this. So we have scheduled a 14-16 week focus on Hebrews, beginning the first week of July. Essentially this will fill up the third quarter of 2007.
I've ordered several high quality commentaries and resources on Hebrews. They should all arrive during March. I hope to get started on the exegesis and detail planning of this project before Easter.
As I've been looking at this more closely, it seems like part of the emphasis will land on personal commitment, the priesthood of Christ (and by extension-all believers), aspects of soteriology and some very rich typology from the OT, as well as a strong Christology and even Angelology.
So this means we may get into issues like personal devotion to Christ, Christ's ministry and our ministries, deeper doctrines of salvation and how specifically does the OT predict Christ's coming in detail through symbolism as well as who really is Jesus and what the nature and ministry of angelic beings consist of as revealed by the letter to the Hebrews.
It promises to be very rich. After I review the materials I have ordered, I will make a recommended list of resources for anyone who is building their own library in the flock (or outside).
